True-VFX Community Competition: Prep

I've made a tentative start on the challenge submission. Some sketching while sitting in a coffee shop. Some water experimentation. A bit of jetty..

Expensive in terms of resources. I thought I'd try a simpler approach

More instancing, arrays and simpler geometry.. not sure..

True-Terrain 5's Water is something else!

True-VFX Community Competition

So, I'm going to force myself to submit an entry. I won't chicken out when two or three entries that are obviously better than mine get submitted. This should spur me on to do better. Keep polishing and improvement, instead of walking away.

The competition rules:

Challenge 12: "The Magic of Water" - Difficult Edition

To celebrate the full version of True Terrain 5, a new challenge is to create any scene using the Ocean, Lake, or River system. You can use any built-in assets, materials, presets or anything else. However, this is the DIFFICULT EDITION, so here´s the catch: NO EXTERNAL POST-PROCESSING is allowed. You can use the Blender Compositor for effects, but nothing outside of Blender. HA!

Deadline: Last Day of 2024 community-challenge-entries

No post-processing is OK, given that you can do so much from within Blender using the compositor. That reminds me: I have a post-processing course now.

I plan to do a village on stilts type scene. I think I'll go tropical.

I'll set up a terrain to get me started with composition.

Figure for scale
It's easier to show off using an aerial camera POV, but you miss out on a more dynamic and interesting composition. Also, there is no skyline.

Scatters
The grasses are too small at this range, so they needed scaling up. I need to break up the scatters a little more. Maybe better pattern masks. I culled areas with a curve, but painting the curve wasn't responsive enough to give a nicely jagged pattern. Those culled areas need some light scatters.

I may lower the camera to get a backdrop in. Although post-work is not allowed, I can render with a background image or do it through the compositor.

Terrains

I'm feeling a bit better today. Although I have a backlog of housework, I had some productive time with True-Terrain 5.

Diorama

New feature! Give terrains that " model mounted on a wooded board" look.

True-Terrain's co-creator approved and noted that you can adjust the terrain's edge textures in the material parameters.

While doing some tidying up I rendered a quick animation:

Lakehouse

I cobbled together a lake house in about an hour.
