I've spent a few days tinkering with Blender. I've been unable to sustain a proper project, dipping in and out of different things. That changes from today...
Blender 4.3 Release
As I write this, the release candidate has been available for a week. The original release date for 4.3 was last week, but several serious bugs forced the foundation to hold back on going gold. That full release should happen this afternoon. This is at exactly the same time that Flight Simulator 2024 is released. [TENSION INTENSIFIES]
I can't promise that I won't end up getting some flights in before getting back to Blender work.
Project Phoenix
My first project with Blender 4.3 is not a creative effort. It's a big Blender refresh where I delete Blender completely and start from scratch. Given that I have a huge number of add-ons, and some of those are pretty complicated to set up. This is a big job that will likely take several hours. Blender supports importing your settings from previous editions, and that mostly works. However, it pays to do a deep clean every few upgrades. Some add-ons are installed but never used; there may be add-ons I didn't previously install but should consider doing so.
Reasons
- Some add-ons clutter the UI. True-Terrain 4 is installed because version 5 was in early access, and you wanted to use the earlier version's asset libraries. That's no longer required, so I'll just install the earlier asset packs directly into version 5. This way, I won't accidentally engage with the version 4 UI panel.
- Loading Blender takes longer the more add-ons you install until you reach a point where it's a minute of sitting around waiting to see the default cube—or whatever you changed your default to contain.
- Stability! This one is mostly hypothetical, as Blender is solid, except for that CPU thing. Still, no harm in doing periodic clean-ups.
